ASBESTOS TRAINING AND
REGULATORY MANDATORY ASBESTOS SURVEYS/INVENTORY
Asbestos was commonly used in Canadian building design and construction until the late 1980's.
Commonly used building materials, included: sprayed structural fire proofing, mechanical
equipment insulation on pipes, ducts, boilers and furnaces. Asbestos was also used in the
manufacture of drywall joint compound, floor and ceiling tiles.
Hard asbestos containing products included, cement pipes and drains as well wall board, outdoor
siding materials used around fireplaces and as acoustic panels.
•
If you own, lease, manage, or work as a contractor in a building with asbestos
containing material, that building must have a current, completed ASBESTOS SURVEY.
•
If you own, lease or manage a building with asbestos containing material, by regulation
you must provide all contractors with specific locations of all asbestos containing
material
•
If you work in a building with asbestos containing material (ACM), or in Asbestos
Removal, you are a candidate for one of our ASBESTOS TRAINING PROGRAMS.
Our Asbestos Training Programs, presented by our registered MTCU trainer, will give you the
knowledge to Identify Regulatory Requirements and React appropriately to potential Asbestos
hazards.

MOULD ASSESSMENTS
MOULD IS EVERYWHERE
Mould is a very robust organism and can be found in a variety of environments. In some applications
such as medicine, bread and cheese making, mould is an asset. In other circumstances such as growth
in an uncontrolled, moist area, it can be a health hazard.
Inhaling the spores and mycotoxins, the more hazardous byproducts of mould decay, may lead
to adverse health effects on some segments of the population. The symptoms of these health
effects are similar to a wide range of other health related conditions. They can range from eye irritation,
dry cough, mucous membrane irritation, chest tightness, muscular pain, allergic rhinitus, bronchitis,
asthma to chronic pulmonary disease. The primary route of entry into the human body is through the
natural process of breathing, another is through eating when contamination has spread to food.
Only a small number of the thousands of species of mould are considered potentially harmful.
The first step in combating unwanted mould growth is to confirm the presence and magnitude.
In the majority of homes and buildings, mould growth is restricted to the immediate area of moisture or
water entry. Every structure has these entry points no matter how unnoticeable they are. Often, the
problem is contained and is not severe enough to warrant major remediation. Regulatory Agencies have
established safe work guidelines for mould assessments and removal. Therefore, if you observe
extensive mould, do not attempt to remove it yourself.

WATER INTRUSION
DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
WATER IS THE WORLD’S UNIVERSAL SOLVENT
AND CAN CAUSE EXTREME DAMAGE IF LEFT UNCHECKED
Have you had a problem with water entry into your building?
Uncontrolled water entry, together with warm temperatures
CAN lead to mould growth in your building.
Mould is a very robust organism that grows rapidly in the presence of moisture, warmth and food. It is
an asset for activities such as baking and pharmaceutical development. However, uncontrolled mould
growth can become a health hazard.
By testing the moisture levels of various building materials and monitoring the air quality for
temperature and relative humidity and bioaerosol sampling we can determine if your building has a
moisture related problem.
Infrared Thermography can greatly assist in detemining the exact location of water intrusion and the
extent of damage to moisture affected material.
WORKPLACE HARASSMENT - IMPARTIAL THIRD PARTY INVESTIGATIONS
Under subsection 32 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), employers must
develop policies in regard to workplace harassment, sexual harassment, and workplace
violence, as well as programs to implement these policies in the workplace.
WPI Safety & Environmental provides:
•
Development and implementation of workplace harassment and workplace sexual
harassment policies
•
Ensure the posting of the policies in a conspicuous place for workers to see
•
Advise how to ensure employees are aware of and understand the policy
•
Review the policies as often as necessary (they should be reviewed at least once per
year)
•
Provide third party workplace harassment investigations
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION TRAINING
Thousands of people suffer from respiratory ailments in Canada each year.
Many of these people contract their illnesses through work related exposure to toxic, viral or
bacterial elements.
These illnesses can be avoided through a combination of equipment and training.
•
Understand environments that require respiratory protection
•
Know which equipment to use in different environments
•
Know how to use the equipment and know it’s limitations
•
Be aware of the necessary safety precautions

INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), is a significant concern in numerous Public, Industrial,
Institutional and Commercial buildings.
Poor building IAQ leads to health concerns and complaints such as: stuffiness, headaches, dry eyes,
settled dust, static, no air movement, lack of “fresh” air and more.
Often, workers are medically diagnosed with work related respiratory ailments, allergies and other
illnesses.
Assessments of building IAQ includes monitoring of temperature, relative humidity, C02, C0, airflow rate
and dispersion patterns, filtration and equipment maintenance, light intensity, and, when indicated,
contaminant sampling and bioaerosol analysis.
Sample collection, analysis of laboratory and monitoring data, and interpretation of site conditions, must
be conducted by competent professionals.
